Whether you’re a seasoned pro hiker or a newbie camper, your sleeping bag is your best friend. But how do you know if it’ll keep you warm enough through a chilly Aussie night? Let’s face it—sleeping bag temperature ratings can be a bit tricky. While they’re helpful, they don’t always tell the full story. These ratings come from lab tests that try to measure how warm a bag keeps you, but real-world camping doesn’t happen in a lab.
Here’s what you need to know:
- EN or ISO temperature ratings are the standard way to compare sleeping bags across different brands. Think of them like nutrition labels—they help you compare options, but they don’t guarantee your personal comfort.
- Your real-world experience may differ. Things like your body type, how cold you usually feel at night, what you’re wearing, the weather, your sleeping pad, and even what you ate for dinner can all affect how warm you feel in a bag.
This is where temperature ratings come in. On most sleeping bags, you’ll see three key numbers: Comfort, Limit, and Extreme - these numbers can be confusing, so let’s break it down!
Comfort
- Think of it as the lowest temp where you'll sleep warm and relaxed, without needing to curl up or add extra layers.
- It's based on the average woman, or someone who feels the cold more easily.
- If you’re someone who feels the cold easily, this is the rating to pay attention to.
Example: A comfort rating of 5°C means you should sleep comfortably at that temperature.
Limit
- This is the lowest temperature at which a warm sleeper (typically the average man) can sleep through the night without waking from the cold—but it won’t be super comfortable.
- You might have to curl up or wear extra layers, but you’ll still get some sleep.
Example: A limit rating of 0°C means it’s pushing the bag’s ability to keep you sleeping at that temperature, especially if you're not naturally warm.
Extreme
- This is the survival limit – the coldest temp where the bag will keep you alive for 6 hours, but you’ll be cold and uncomfortable, and at risk of hypothermia.
- This is for emergency situations only, not for planned use.
Example: A -10°C extreme rating means you might survive that temperature, but it’ll very uncomfortable and not recommended for use over an extended period of time.
General Tips
- Everyone sleeps differently - if you feel the cold easily, it’s best to go warmer.
- Add a sleeping mat (ground insulation matters!) and wear thermal layers to boost warmth.
- Wind, humidity and how tired you are can all affect how cold you feel.
