The Ultimate Aussie Summer Camping Checklist: What You’ll Actually Use

The Ultimate Aussie Summer Camping Checklist: What You’ll Actually Use

Packing for a summer camping trip can go one of two ways: you either forget the tent pegs or you bring the entire contents of “just in case.” This list is here to save you from both. No fluff — just the gear you’ll actually reach for when you’re out in the Aussie sun, swatting mozzies and creating memories by the fire.

1. Shelter & Sleep Set-Up

Tent (with all the poles, pegs and guy ropes)

Tip: We always recommend doing a full set-up of your tent at home before you leave, to ensure you’re not missing any parts, and your tent isn’t damaged.

Groundsheet

Summer-weight sleeping bag - Hot nights call for light sleeping gear.

Camping mat/mattress

Pillow

2. Camp Kitchen & Food

Portable stove or BBQ - Make sure you’ve got gas or fuel, and a lighter.

Frypan, saucepan and the basics - You don’t need your whole kitchen, just the essentials. Think tongs, a spatula, and a sharp knife.

Reusable plates, bowls, cups & cutlery

Cooler - Because nobody wants a hot can of drink.

Water jerry can & refillable bottles - Be sure to check if your campground has drinking water.

Dishwashing kit - Tea towel, scourer, soap and a collapsible tub or bucket.

Easy meals & snacks you’ll actually eat - Think sausage sandwiches, wraps, pasta, pre-cut salad, fruit, trail mix, Tim Tams, etc.

3. Clothes You’ll Live In

Think about how many nights and days you’ll be away.

Light, breathable clothes - T-shirts, shorts, singlets — and bring one spare change, you never know when an accident could happen.

Warm layer for cool nights - A fleece or jumper (because even in Summer, Australia can get chilly after sundown).

Swimmers & towel - For beach swims, river dips or bush showers with a bucket.

Hat & sunnies - The Australian sun in summer does not muck around.

Socks & sturdy shoes - Hiking boots or trainers, plus thongs for the showers and around camp.

Rain jacket or poncho - Summer storms love to make a surprise entrance.

4. Toiletries & Personal Items

Sunscreen & mozzie repellent - Slip, slop, slap and spray.

Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant & needed toiletries

Biodegradable wipes & hand sanitiser - Your best mate when the camp showers are questionable.

Quick-dry towel

First aid kit - Bandaids, antiseptic, painkillers, and any personal meds.

5. Camp Comforts

Camp chairs & a fold-out table

Head lamp or torch (with spare batteries) - Hands-free is king, especially for midnight loo trips.

Power bank - Reception or not, you’ll still need to charge your phone.

Rubbish bags - Leave the bush how you found it, and ensure you leave no trace.

Multi-tool or pocket knife

6. The Fun Stuff

Customise this to what you know you’ll enjoy doing.

Portable speaker (with playlists downloaded)

Deck of cards or Board Games

Books

Camera or journal

Fishing gear, snorkel set, cricket bat or hiking pack

Stuff You Pack and Never Use

  • Cast-iron cookware that weighs than your tent
  • Five different chopping boards
  • Giant lanterns when a head torch does the job-Half your wardrobe — you’ll wear the same shirt three days in a row and call it “camp clean”

Final Tip: Pack Smart, Not the Whole Shed

The best trips don’t come from having every bit of gear — they come from good mates, gear that actually gets used, and the kind of memories that stick around long after the campfire’s out.

Print this list, check it off, and hit the road. Happy camping!
